How the Journey Started

Inspired many years ago by a PBS documentary about Beatrice Potter (of Peter Rabbit fame) and how she initially self-published due to a lack of interest on the part of the publishers of the day (and the fact that her class-conscience family objected to her pursuing a career), I chose to publish my first story written for children entitled Santa's Helpers. It was what I wanted more than a larger house or automobile, and it was one of the most rewarding decisions of my life. Santa's Helpers was a personal success that inspired me to continue to explore all that my mind could imagine. Other stories followed and at this writing I have published two other books for children: Kids, Kats, Bears & Bugs and KeeBeeWeeBee, the Ambassador of Honeycomb Hive.

While not widely distributed (takes a lot of work and money), Santa's Helpers was sold by Marshall Field's and Kroch's and Brentano's in the Chicagoland area. Some books appeared in small retail outlets in other parts of the U. S. and an accompanying song I wrote and produced was played on radio stations (mostly small) across North America. I appeared on local cable during the Santa Claus hour and autographed copies at local stores and restaurants during the Christmas season for several years running. Also, I tried to get corporations interested in sponsoring a made-for-TV version and even had a couple of Hollywood contacts place copies in the hands of people like Mr. Barbara of Hanna Barbara and Carl Reiner of Archie Bunker fame. But to no avail. That was before the Internet.

Today, like many others, I'm no longer dependent upon big name publishers. I'm presenting my material to the World's critics (you and you and you) and I will endure any lumps you lay upon me and relish the accolades, if any (please). However, if opinions of friends, neighbors, employees, area teachers and local librarians rate, you and your family will enjoy (treasure) my stories. To date, all are written for youngsters from 3 - 11 years of age and adults who enjoy revisiting the joys of childhood.
